The Deep Sea and the Deep Mind

Beneath the surface of the ocean lies a world that few humans have seen and even fewer understand. Stretching miles below the surface, the deep sea is an environment of unimaginable pressure, darkness, and cold. Yet, life thrives there. The organisms that call these extreme environments home have evolved to endure conditions that would crush most living things. These creatures are known as extremophiles, and they live in a world as foreign to us as the vacuum of space. The pressures at such depths are so intense that they exceed 100 MPa, equivalent to the weight of 1,000 times the atmosphere we experience on land.

The question that has fascinated scientists for decades is how these organisms survive — and even thrive — under such extreme conditions. In 2024, a team of researchers at Johns Hopkins University took a bold step forward in answering this question. They developed a new method, known as high-pressure limited proteolysis (Hi-P LiP), which allows for the first proteome-wide analysis of how proteins — the molecular machines of life — are affected by high pressure.
